The Economics of the Madhouse

Can Corby Borough Council really be serious?

Despite their protestations claiming shortage of money, which culminated in the most savage cuts in community services this town has ever experienced, what do we now hear?

A leaked report in a recent edition of the local 'newspaper', the Evening Telegraph, stated that the Council will spend around £250,000 refurbishing the ex-Territorial Army building in Elizabeth Street.

This building will then house the Volunteer Bureau for TWO YEARS before it is redeveloped.

ARE THEY MAD?

OR IS THIS THE REWARD THE  VOLUNTEER BUREAU
GET FOR THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE 'NO' CAMPAIGN FOR ELECTED MAYOR IN THE RECENT REFERENDUM?

A CAMPAIGN HEADED BY THE LEADER OF CORBY BOROUGH COUNCIL,
ROBERT HEARNE,  AND SUPPORTED, BEHIND THE SCENES, BY THE COUNCIL

Below are extracts from a letter sent to the Evening Telegraph on this subject.

Dear Editor

Re: The report in the Evening Telegraph of the 28/12/2002,  relative  to comments by the Chief Executive of Catalyst Corby, Bob Lane, concerning the refurbishment of the empty former Territorial Hall in Elisabeth Street, for the temporary home of the Corby Volunteer Bureau,

(1) Who is going to pay for the refurbishing ???
(2) What is the estimated cost of the refurbishment?  Could it be £20,000 or even £100,000?
(3) Can the cost be measured via Best Value Regimes ???

As to his statement , and I quote, 'in terms of our redevelopment of the town centre, this will  also free up another central shop'.

Mr Lane, the shop you refer to is situated right next door to the Public Toilets in Queens Square.
Who do expect to rent it, Del Trotter & Co at a 50% discount.

Yours sincerely
Don Maguire

The shop in question is indeed next to the public toilets,  in a dark and dismal area of Queens Square.
It  is a little shop hardly suitable for anything other than, perhaps, another card shop - to join the 5 we already have.

Seriously Mr Lane, do you think 'freeing up' this poky little shop unit will really bring a major player into the town centre?

FreeCorby joins in asking - Who is paying for it?

We can tell you .........

It is Corby taxpayers yet again.

Either through the Council via the council tax or Catalyst Corby via the £750,000 council tax funded contribution given them by Corby Borough Council (an amount which will climb to well over £1m in the next few years).

All to reward the Volunteer Bureau for breaching their charitable status in supporting a campaign
designed solely to maintain power for a few councillors.

They sacrificed the needs of  the many for the greed of the few.

Shame on you all
