Who funded the 'NO' campaign for an elected mayor?
The recent referendum for an elected mayor for Corby ended on 1st
October 2002. The result was a narrow victory for the 'No' campaign by
880 votes.
At the beginning of the campaign there were persistent rumours of the
involvement of various groups and individuals.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Phil Hope MP
It is alleged that a part of Mr Hope's office was festooned
with newspaper cuttings from the 'Yes' campaign.
The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister now administers Local Government
Affairs and, as such, must remain neutral.
Did Mr Hope really allow his publicly funded office to be used for
a political campaign in support of the 'No' group?
Did Mr Hope compromise his position as Parliamentary Private
Secretary to John Prescott, the Deputy Prime Minister by actively getting
involved in the 'No' campaign?
Did Mr Hope provide any funding for the 'No' campaign?
Did Mr Hope provide any other facilities to the 'No' campaign?

The Volunteer Bureau - Mark Howson
The Volunteer Bureau in Corby are a registered charity almost wholly
funded by Corby Borough Council.
Indeed they were among the few organisations that never suffered cuts
in the March 1st budget set by CBC.
Did the Volunteer Bureau provide assistance to the 'No' campaign, either
in cash or in kind?
Does this contravene their charitable status?
Have they been promised an increase in funding for their 'help' to
Rob Hearne, Leader of CBC?
-------------------------------
FORTAC
Fortac is an agency of Corby Borough Council on housing matters.
They had a 3000% increase in their funding just a few months before
the March 1st budget cuts. They were recently given a £10,000 additional
grant by Corby Borough Council, is this a 'thank you' for their help?
What help did this Council Agency give to the 'No' campaign?
How can an agency of the council get involved in a political campaign
when the council are supposed to remain neutral?
-------------------------------------------
Corby Borough Council
The law states that the council must remain neutral during the referendum.
'FreeCorby' have seen a draft document produced on behalf of Council
Leader Rob Hearne. There is a strong suggestion that this was produced
using council equipment.
What help did council officers give 'behind the scenes' to the 'No'
campaign?
Why were certain Officers of the council so relieved when the No' campaign
narrowly won?
Why didn't the council issue a factual statement, as allowed by law,
refuting the bogus claims as to costs made by the 'No' campaign?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Des Glen
Mr Glen is a leader of the 'No' campaign, also a magistrate
The 'No' campaign produced a blatantly illegal leaflet.
When informed of this they continued to distribute the document, showing
an arrogance and contempt for the law unsurpassed in Corby in recent times.
Recently, on the local radio, Mr Glen stated that the 'Yes' group should
forget going to law and move on.
Did Mr Glen contribute any finance to the 'No' campaign?
Has Mr Glen, or any organisations he is involved in been promised any
funds in the next budget?
Does Mr Glen, a magistrate, condone ignoring criminal acts?
What involvement did Mr Glen have in the continued distribution of
these illegal leaflets?
Does Mr Glen feel that he is a suitable person to sit in judgement
of others?
